Patterns of Communication
This image is part of a series exploring the nature of shadows. Are shadows just a passive result of optics, or are they things in themselves?
Victoria Albuquerque is drawn to shadows which often appear as subtle or startling figures in their own right, setting off the meaning of an image by creating a dialogue. In this picture the shadows are the actors within the space, and yet they are a product of the space.
‘Patterns of Communication’ was taken during the full moon of 11th June 2024, the aperture was open for 3.2 sec and 13mm f2.4. The digital file has been converted into a giclee print using archival inks and 310gsm Canson Cotton Rag. The print run number comes from a number, meaning ‘trust the process, trust that everything will work out’.
I have 22 prints (unframed) for offer until the RA exhibition finishes 17th August 2025.
Each print is 40 x 50 cm and can be shipped worldwide, get in touch for shipping prices.

Identity Series
Award winning Hand Finished Edition 'A Year of Washing' - Giclée Fine Art prints
A Year of Washing
Shortlisted for a Jackson's Fine Art Prize
Part of a series which explores identity.
In 2020 I painted a couple of paintings of straight washing lines; they were Blue Towel and What Would Happen If I Wasn't Here? In 2021, I searched to find a different shaped washing line. I looked at painting Lee Miller's washing line at the local Farley's Farmhouse, Chiddingly, but it was not really her washing-line, it was the house keepers and it was in a field hidden behind the house. A Year of Washing was painted from a friend's garden, I enjoyed the contrast of the old Listed building dating back to 15th century and the modern rotary which was designed to take a lot more washing at one time.

Hand Finished Edition Painting 'Blue Towel' - Giclée Fine Art prints
A Blue Towel
Shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitione
Part of a series which explores identity.
This is the starting point of the Identity series. The original painting is inspired by a neon yellow washing line tied between two buildings, giving a temporary or long term solution to hang out washing. After a swim in the cold English sea, my swim towel dries in the wind.

Royal Academy Shortlisted Hand Finished Edition 'Shepherd's Hut and Car' - Giclée Fine Art prints
Shepherd's Hut and Car
Shortlisted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
Part of a series which explores identity.
In 2020 I painted a couple of paintings of straight washing lines; they were Blue Towel and Royal Academy Summer Exhibition exhibited What Would Happen If I Wasn't Here? A year on and I wanted to expand on this washing line/identity these, locally I found a location of washing lines which really appealed to me. I produced two paintings; one with washing in it, and one with the washing absent from the painting. Shephard's Hut and Car is the painting without washing. There is something between the two objects, a contrast; the Shepherd's hut that sits on wheels, made for the ease of moving around and a car, also on wheels, designed to move around too.

Royal Academy Hand Finished 'What Would Happen If I Wasn't Here?' - Giclée Fine Art prints
'What Would Happen If I Wasn't Here' Shepherd's Hut and Car
Exhibited Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
Part of a series which explores identity.
This piece is inspired by observing the rigger required of life.
As amulets we all have many different roles or identities that we need to play. A mother, father, wife, husband, employee, director, CEO, free lancer, daughter, son, best friend, aunt, uncle, the list is long. All these roles pull us in many directions, planting stress on and effecting our mental health. This painting explored the dark idea of what would happen if those roles were not satisfied.
10% of the profit goes to a mental health charity.

Hand Finished Edition 'Sussex Pond' - Giclée Fine Art prints
Sussex Pond
Part of a series which explores identity.
My art studio is down a mud track, off a tiny Wealden country road. As well as it being home to my studio, it is also home to heritage cows, a trickling pond, ducks and an Oast house.
I find extreme comfort in the wildlife and foliage of the pond. The light was beginning to rise from the east and gave a strong contrast between the field of wild flowers and the rich blue of the water in the pond.
I initially titled this painting Dew Pond; dew ponds are small, round ponds sited in hollows, made by digging a pit and lining it with clay. They're found in a few dry, hilly places, like the South Downs, where there's no water running down the hillsides because the rock underneath the surface is mostly chalk and full of small openings and all the rain water drains away underground. The soil around my studio is not chalk and does not drain easily, it is clay, thick and muddy, holding the water as firmly as a glass. If the pond near my studio isn't a dew pond, then what is it and what shall I name the painting of the pond?
I have been told about an old English recipe called Sussex Pond Pudding and giggling with delight as I felt that this was a much more fitting name for my painting. Sussex Pond was born.
