You are a work of art

Here are two portraits I did for an 80th birthday commission.
The one on the left is a sketch painting, this gives you an idea of what can be done in three x 2 hours in person sittings. The right hand painting is from a mixture of the sketch painting and a photos taken during the sitting and took about a week to paint.

I am trained to paint from life, under the esteemed artist Andy Pankhurst, a protégé of Euan Uglow.  I specialise in creating portraits that capture the essence of my subjects. While I prefer painting from life, I understand the constraints many individuals face. Thus, I offer single photographic portrait sessions, ensuring a meticulous process where I get to know the sitter, sketch and photograph the sitter, while taking colour notes.
The image selection is collaborative, which guarantees an end satisfaction. Please note that I always prioritise meeting the sitter to ensure a personal connection. While I am based in East Sussex, I can work between rural Sussex, Los Angeles and London.

For commissions that need to fit a particular budget (such as paintings as a gift) then I can help advise the best approach and composition. I find that portraits are becoming increasingly popular, as well as the painting of nudes or of partly clothed portraits.  I understand from the sitter that the process gives a feeling of empowerment and a route to allow space to accept oneself.

​Please note that the cost can be higher for portraits with exceptionally detailed features such as clothing, jewellery and backgrounds.
Wherever possible I try to include delivery within the prices provided.
As well as completing portrait commissions I am also available for portraits of houses, landscapes and still life.
Please bear in mind that I accept commissions alongside my other art projects and sometimes there may be a waiting list.

This is the portrait I did of Cynthia, it is painted just from observation.  Sitting times a total of 15 hours;  3 hours, each day for a week. The light came from the window behind her and created interesting shadows on the brightly coloured poncho and the floor.  The poncho was a gift from her husband while he was working in Peru, South America. She listened to Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland while sitting.

Although I am happy to work from life, most of my clients prefer the convenience of a single photographic sitting.  Whether that is clothed or unclothed, I am finding that there is a growing need for painted portraits, especially people wanting to gain  confidence while using the space to pose for a portrait.


Normally, for smaller portraits, this sitting takes place at my studio in East Sussex; for larger portraits, I can travel to your home.  If working from photographs, a half-day sitting is needed to give ample time to get a good portfolio of photographs, and one preferred photo selected.  If working from life, the number of sittings needed depends on the size and type of portrait required, but they will need to be ideally on consecutive days. I work only in water-based oils (which offer the depth of colour of oils but with the safety of not using turpentine). I paint any size portrait, from head and shoulders, through 3/4 length to full length.
